Register Early for Summer Camp Fun at WKCTC

Need something for your kids or grandkids to do this summer? West Kentucky Community and Technical College will offer a variety of summer camps for area youth beginning in June. The camps will fill up quickly so early registration is encouraged. 
 
The camps are designed for students in first through twelfth grade and will be held in various buildings on campus.
 
All LEGO and robotic camps are offered half a day this year. However, if a child is registered for a morning camp, an afternoon camp that compliments the morning session and aligns with their age and grade is offered during the same week. One can decide not register a child for a morning camp.
 
A 10% discount is offered if one or more children are registered for a camp or if a child is registered for multiple camps.
 
June 5 – 9
 
Code Makers 1.0 (Non Lego Based), 8 – 11:30 a.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: 1 – 2 grade
This camp gives the novice child a jump on computer programming literacy, which many believe to be a necessary 21st century skill. Students will develop their basic coding\ skills through a variety of digital tools. The tools include a virtual gaming platform using the web educational tools at Kodable.com and Tynker.com. Students will develop characters, solve puzzles and create simple digital games, while also learning the seven basic tools of computer coding.
 
NXT LEGO Robotics & the Mars Mission, 8 – 11:30 a.m.

Age: 5 – 8 grade
This camp allows students to use the classic NXT LEGO Robotics system to build a mobile robot and add four sensors that help them mimic human-like behavior. Students will apply their skills to solve "Mars Mission LEGO Adventure" problems using the robot and the software-programming environment. Students will share missions accomplished on the last day of the camp.
 
WeDo Robotics 1.0, 12:30 - 4 p.m.

Age: 1 – 3 grade
For new campers, we offer the classic WeDo Robotics (1.0). This proven program challenges young students to build and program interactive robotic models while providing age appropriate visual instruction. LEGO lovers will pair up with a partner to build birds, soccer players, giants, planes and more! Plus, students learn how to use computer coding to help manipulate their creations. Show-and-tell on the last day of camp will allow parents to celebrate your child's accomplishments for the week.
 
Simple Machine 1.0, 12:30 – 4 p.m.

Age: 1 – 3 grade
Our most popular camp will provide students with experiences that will enlighten them on the basics of machines by building, manipulating and testing LEGO models. Students will pair up to share a Simple Machine LEGO kit (over 300 pieces) and put LEGO motors to work on their constructions later in the week. This camp challenges young students while providing age appropriate visual instructions. Students will learn foundational engineering principles in the motivating environment of LEGOs.
 
June 12-16
 
Code Makers 2.0 (Non Lego Based), 8 – 11:30 a.m.

Age: 2 – 5 grade
Like Code Makers 1.0, this camp gives your child a jump on computer programming literacy, which many believe to be a necessary 21st century skill. Students will develop their basic coding skills through a variety of digital tools including virtual gaming platform using the web educational tools at Kodable.com and Tynker.com. In this intermediate camp, students will post some of their creations on the web so they are accessible for family and friends using an instructor provided password. Additional topics covered in this intermediate coding camp (to help create games) include keyboard/mouse interaction, conditional loops, fluid motion, parallax scrolling, local and global variables, functions and object cloning.
 
Make it / Take it - June 12 – 16, 8 – 11:30 a.m.

Age: 5 – 8 grade
Cost: $200
Campers will experience a Makerspace! Our "Makerspace" is a safe building environment for youth and will mix raw materials with technology to create something amazing! This camp will provide each camper with a variety of hands-on learning experiences that connect to science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) topics. Classic experiences like Origami paper folding will be combined with construction based problem solving. Finally, these experiences will be combined with digital design experiences (like Google SketchUp). Selected constructions/technologies will be sent home at the end of the camp. Cost includes $75 for materials and technology fee.
 
WeDo Robotics 2.0, 12:30 – 4 p.m.

Age: 1 – 2 grade
Children who have enjoyed a WeDo LEGO camp will find new challenges in the WeDo LEGO2.0 camp. This camp uses the latest Lego Educational Kit, as well as different builds from the WeDo 1.0 camp. Students will still get an innovative interactive experience that introduces them to more concepts in computer programming. The more the student learns, the more they enjoy their creations as they control their movements and sounds.
 
EV3 Robotics 1.0, 12:30 – 4 p.m.

Age: 5 – 8 grade
EV3 Robotics 1.0 is our introductory robotics camp for EV3 LEGO robotics. Students will learn about and develop literacy about the latest and most powerful robotics system created by LEGO's - the EV3. Students will be introduced to the computer science through the Guided User Interface (GUI) programming environment. This will be crucial to students creating human like behavior in the mobile robotic each pair of students will create. At the end of the week, students will be given a choice of to
build a special interactive model for show-and-tell on the last day of camp.

This camp is for the camper who experienced the LEGO Simple Machine 1.0 camp previously. Students will enjoy how this camp deepens their experience with engineering principles with more challenging builds.
 
June 26 – 30
 
TinkerCAD & 3D Printing 1.0, 8 – 11:30 a.m.

Age: 3 – 5 grade
Students will learn digital environments that will let them create in computer-aided design (CAD) and introduced to the process needed to create structures from a 3D printer. WKCTC Extreme science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) camps will provide students access to our arsenal of 3D printers and allow them to bring home several creations from some of the digital files they will generate from various 3D design platforms.
 
APP Inventors, 8 – 11:30 a.m.

Age: 5 – 10 grade
Campers will take advantage of the tools developed MIT to apply program languages like JavaScript and Python to the world of App building. Campers will be walked through the building of a simple app and then encouraged to develop an app from a menu of choices such as game design, GPS applications and more.

EV3 Robotics 2.0, 12:30 – 4 p.m.

Age: 5 – 9 grade
Children who have enjoyed EV3 LEGO camps or have or have experienced EV3's in other settings will find new challenges in the EV3 LEGO 2.0 camps. This camp is for the competitive RCX or First Lego Leaguer looking to gather more experience and expertise with programming techniques, sensor applications and strategy in preparation for the 2016-17 competition season. Students will be
challenged to complete mission/s with their robot and LEGO attachments they develop. Students will demonstrate missions accomplished on the last day of camp.
 
TinkerCAD & 3D Printing 2.0, 12:30 – 4 p.m.

Age: 5 – 10 grade
Like TinkerCAD & 3D Printing 1.0, students will learn digital environments that will let them create in computer-aided design (CAD) and be introduced to the process needed to create structures from a 3D printer. During this camp, student experiences will include a challenge where they design digital design creative structures for the purpose of addressing a problem-solving scenario. The printed results will be tested for quality as well as a solution to the problem. Students will be able to take some of their solutions with them at the end of the camp.
