At Monday's McCracken County Fiscal Court meeting, Mercy Regional EMS announced that it had won the American Heart Association's Mission Lifeline Gold award.

The American Heart Associations recognizes the critical life saving role EMS provides to the overall success of STEMI Systems of care. The correct tools and training allow EMS providers to respond quickly and get information to the hospital while en route with the patent.

Dr. Irvan Smith, Director of Mercy Regional EMS, said, "This is the Second year that Mercy Regional has received the American Heart Association's Mission Lifeline Gold Award. When we apply, we apply as a team with Mercy Regional being the lead agency and we include all of our fire departments and law enforcement."

Sixteen Kentucky agencies received either bronze, silver or gold. In total, nine gold awards were given in the state. Mercy Regional is the only agency west of I-65 to receive the gold award.

Dr. Smith presented the awards to the McCracken County Fire Departments and the McCracken County Sheriff's Department. Both Baptist Health and Lourdes won the award also.

"A few years ago, the goal was ninety minutes from the time the patient hits the hospital till they get in the CATH lab and get the artery opened up. Now that time is shortened, that ninety minutes includes from the first time we contact them and getting them to the ED." Dr. Smith said.

Mercy Regional achieved 75 percent or higher on the following metrics for two years:

-Percentage of patients with non traumatic chest pain older than 35, They are treated and transported by EMS and receive a pre-hospital twelve lead ECG.

-Percentage of STEMI patients that are transported to a STEMI receiving center  in less than ninety minutes.

Mercy Regional will also recognize the Paducah Police Department with the same award at the upcoming Paducah City Commission meeting.
