At Thursday's McCracken County Board of Education meeting, board members voted unanimously to keep county school property tax rates at their current levels.

Taxes on real estate and tangible property will remain at 50.4 cents per $100.00, a rate unchanged since 2009. The tax rate on motor vehicles and watercraft will also remain the same, at 52.9 cents per $100.00. The utility, gross receipts and license tax rate will also stay at the current rate of three percent, a rate unchanged since 1985.

Board member Michael Hatton shared the view that a tax hike is not needed at this time.

"I'm a firm believer in the fact that problems are not always solved by raising taxes," Hatton said. "I think we should live within our means."

The board also approved a motion to institute a new program that will offer free admission for students to school sponsored sporting events.

The program, known as the Mustang Kids Club, will allow students who are accompanied by a paying adult to gain free admission to school sanctioned sporting events in the county. The board voted unanimously to approve the motion.
