The McCracken County Public School System has alerted parents of a social media and texting trend that could pose security issues for students and their families.

In a Facebook post, the school system issued a warning about "number neighbors," where people are encouraged to call or text people whose phone number is one digit different. For example, if a person's last four digits of their phone number are 5555, their "number neighbors" would be 5554 and 5556.

This practice could be dangerous, since students would be revealing their phone numbers to strangers, and have no idea how the other person might interpret the communication or what they might plan to do with the information.

McCracken County Schools encouraged parents to talk to their children about responsible use of their phones and the internet and how to keep their information private. They also encouraged parents to monitor their children's use of texting and social media.
