The community education catalog at West Kentucky Community and Technical College is available online and again offers a variety of experiences to individuals of all ages. Classes in culinary creation, defense tactics, beekeeping, Zumba, art and design and digital photography are just a few of the many community offerings this fall.
 
The catalog, which details offerings from now through December, provides an easy guide to each class offering and provides the community members with the opportunity to learn a new hobby, learn a new skill, enjoy time doing a favorite activity, or even enroll in a college course. Lifestyles, Fitness and Hobbies
Zumba!
August 1 – October 24
Mondays, 4:45 – 5:45 p.m.
Haws Gymnasium
Age: Adult
Zumba is a dance fitness program that combines Latin and international music with dance in an effort to make exercise fun! The music has beat and tempo changes that move the workout from one toning, strengthening or cardio move to another, and targets every major muscle group in the body. Zumba uses dance styles such as Salsa, Merengue, Mambo, Hip Hop, Tango and more. Cost: 12 sessions, $20.
 
Basic Floral Design – Fall Themed Creations (New)
August 11, 18, 25, September 1, 6 – 8 p.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: Adult
Interior Designer Maryann Cain will introduce participants to the world of floral design. This class will focus on fall designs for the home, teaching students to create bows, step-by-step floral design and ultimately wreaths that will be the envy of family and friends. Class meets four consecutive Thursday evenings. Students will be responsible for some supplies. Cost: $89.
 
Defense Tactics
Sexual Harassment & Rape Prevention
August 11-12, 8 a.m., 5 – 9 p.m.
August 13, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: Adult
The PPCT Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention (SHARP) course has been specifically designed to meet the needs of women when control methods and assault prevention methods are required. Principles and strategies for effectively reducing the likelihood of assault through actual techniques of countering an
attack are stressed in this program. Cost: $85.
 
Photography
Digital Photography 101
August 16 – September 13, 6 – 8 p.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: Adult
Learn the basics of making a great photograph. Class will cover topics like camera types, aperture, shutter speeds, ISO, composition, posing, lighting and how they work together to produce a great photograph. A local field trip and critique to
test your skills will be scheduled. Class meets five consecutive Tuesday evenings. Please bring camera to class; not
a point and shoot camera. Cost: $100.
 
Introduction to Digital Negatives and Alternative Printing Processes (New)
August 27, September 3, 10, 17, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
PSAD 2D Graphic and Design Building, 905 Harrison Street
Age: High School Students – Adult
Learn how to create and print large format digital negatives for use in alternative contact printing techniques. The term alternative printing refers to any nontraditional or non-commercial photographic printing process. This is not a beginning photography course. Students must provide their own digital camera and have a fundamental understanding of Adobe Photoshop. $35 fee for supplies due at first meeting. Class size limited to 15.
Cost: $120.

Raving Ravioli
August 18, 6 p.m.
Anderson Technical Building Culinary Kitchen and Bistro
Age: Adult
Join Anita Granier in making homemade ravioli stuffed with sweet potato filling and covered in brown butter sauce. The side dish is Southern Italy’s famous Arugula, Parmigianino & Prosciutto Salad. Italian bread will be served with herb butter and olive oil and the Italian meal will conclude with gelato and almond cookies. Cost: $45.
 
Healthy Homemade
August 30, 6 p.m.
Anderson Technical Building Culinary Kitchen and Bistro
Age: Adult
Who says homemade meals can’t be healthy, easy and inexpensive? These dishes are quick and easy that
aren’t just homemade and healthy they can be mostly home grown as well. Join Traci Ledford to prepare a fresh garden dump salad, garden vegetable casserole and skillet chicken and pasta. Cost: $45.
Computer Offerings
Microsoft Excel 2013
August 23, 25, 30, September 1, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: Adult
If you are new to Microsoft Excel 2013 or need a refresher course in the basics of Excel worksheets, this course is designed for you. Included in this class are the following topics: program fundamentals, working with simple formulas, editing and formatting worksheets, managing worksheets within a workbook and working with charts. Class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday nights for two consecutive weeks. Cost: $95.
Friday Night Science
Engineering with Minecraft
August 26, 5 – 7 p.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: Grades 1-5
Kids learn the basics of the engineering design process by using Minecraft Legos to create their own Minecraft creation, dissect a creeper, touch real Minecraft rocks and more. Cost: $25.
 
Paducah School of Art and Design
Introduction to Oil Painting
August 27, September 3, 10, 9:30 a.m. – Noon
PSAD 2D Graphic and Design Building, 905 Harrison Street
Age: Adult
This class provides basic instruction in oil painting for beginners. Working from the still life, students will learn how to set up the palette, color mixing, brush selection and oil painting techniques. Students should wear appropriate clothing and a shop apron. Cost: $78.

Student grade oil paints (Winton-Windsor & Newton): Titanium White (large tube), Lemon Yellow Hue (large
tube), Medium Red or Cadmium Red Med (small tube), Cobalt Violet Hue (small tube), Ultramarine Blue (small
tube), Cerulean Blue (sky blue) (small tube); Linseed Stand Oil or Refined Linseed Oil, Turpenoid (no turpentine); Brushes (Monarch or Galeria Winsor & Newton): Flat (No. 2, No. 8, No. 14 or No. 12), Filbert (No.10 No.12 or No.14), Round Filbert: (No.2, No.6.), wood palette, palette knives, assorted – for mixing paint and as painting tools, sighting stick, view finder (If you do not wish to buy one, instructor will demonstrate how to make one), rags, drafting tape, two canvases 16” x 20”.
