The St. Mary Circuit Breakers, Fulton County Elementary/Middle School Pilot Pride and Reidland Middle School Robo Hounds were the first, second and third overall winners of the First LEGO League regional tournament held at West Kentucky Community and Technical College in December. St. Mary won the Robot Performance Award, Fulton County won the Project Award and Reidland won the Core Values Award.
The students were among 200 participants that attended the first-ever WKCTC competition, including more than 100 area elementary and middle school students from Calloway, Fulton, Marshall and McCracken counties, as well as St. Mary, Hopkinsville and various private schools.
The First Lego League is an international robotics program for students designed to get young people excited about science, technology, and engineering, while teaching them valuable life skills at the same time. The competition also promotes creativity, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
“We wish all our students the best of luck in the state competition,” said Mellisa Duncan, Challenger Learning Center at Paducah director and co-organizer of the WKCTC competition. “If any of the teams win in Bowling Green, they will compete at the national level; we are proud the college’s tournament was their first step to moving forward in the LEGO League competitions.”
