Lauren and Lois from Detroit are in the middle of their first trip to Paducah's QuiltWeek to celebrate their 60th and 65th birthdays. They've heard lots about our spectacular Quilt City USA but never thought they would actually get to be here and experience the four-day quilting extravaganza. The avid quilters are best friends. They decided last month to make the trip and see for themselves what in the world they've been missing the past three decades. They are driving in from Carbondale, IL each day because that was as close as they could find accommodations. They saved for two years to do something special and memorable for their birthdays. It was obvious they were enjoying every minute.

With map and tourism's calendar of events in hand, Lois remarked, "So far we've not been disappointed. This little town is everything we've heard it would be-and more. We want to move here and just hang out at the Quilt Museum. We think you guys have the best of the best right here - all the great quilters' quilts come to you, the food options are exceptional and riding the buses from place to place is perfect for us. We could spend all four days at the show but there are so many places to go and see different kinds of quilts-and the dogwoods. We don't have this in Detroit. You guys are so friendly. Is it for real? We feel like you guys have a quaint and classy town here. The greeters in the Red Coats do this for free? Just because they love this town? That's just unheard of. This IS the best birthday gift we could ever give each other."

As the girls talked about how much fun they are having and how terrific a place Paducah is, it was a tremendous reminder of just how much we Paducahans take for granted. If western Kentucky could hand-pick a specific group to invade out river town and double our population for four days, quilters ARE the perfect choice.

QuiltWeek is held throughout Paducah. The actual AQS Quilt Show and Contest are held in the Paducah Expo Center and Carroll Convention Center. Vendors are in the Convention Center and big white pavilion on Park Avenue adjacent to the show.
