Those who support merger cited several benefits and advantages for Paducah and McCracken County in a press release from Paducah-McCracken United.
“For 50 years I have heard that “they” do not want Paducah to grow. It has taken me a long time to realize that “they” are the people of our community who will not run for office, are against any change or effort to improve the community, and who stand by and wonder why the world is passing us by,” said Billy Harper. He continued, “Paducah/McCracken Co. is a great community and we need to Vote YES to Merger. Then we need to encourage our best and brightest citizens to run for offices in the new government.”
Merged government proponents say this step will position Paducah and McCracken County as a thriving community, in which companies want to locate their business, creating job and population growth. They say it will move Paducah from the 15th largest city in the state to the third largest.
“Merger would combine the talents of two successful organizations and give our community greater clout within the state and region, allowing us to attract more industry,” said former city commissioner, Buz Smith.
Leaders in favor of merger say it will create one government body, increasing efficiencies and accountability.
“Merger will mean less bureaucracy and more accountability to our local government by district representation and imposing term limits on politicians. It is important that our local governments stop bickering and speak with one voice for the benefit of all its citizens,” said Tom Garrett.
Merged government will provide fair representation for suburban, urban and rural districts in McCracken County, according to supporters.
“My primary reason for support is to increase the level of tax fairness for all of our citizens,” said Maurie McGarvey. She continued, “All those who work within the city are required to pay payroll tax to the city. Merger provides an opportunity for tax equity for all!”
“We desperately need a sense of unity and a spirit of cooperation in our community in order to move forward in a positive direction in the years to come,” said Calvin Shanks. “This merger is only the first step in making that happen. We all have to get on board and work together.”
