The City of Paducah has released more results from the National Citizen Survey they conducted earlier this year.

One of the survey's first questions related to how safe people feel in their neighborhood during they daytime hours. In the city's press release, they say 91% feel very safe or somewhat safe. This rating is very similar to the previous two surveys, where a 90% rating was received in 2016 and 88% in 2013.

Paducah Police Chief Brandon Barnhill said, “This question is extremely important to the Paducah Police Department since community safety is a concept that encompasses many factors ranging from the reduction and prevention of injury and crime to the ongoing engagement with a community to build strong and cohesive relationships. We work each and every day to maintain the safety of the Paducah area through great policing and detective work and by looking for opportunities to partner with businesses and citizens.”

Regarding the quality of fire services, the percent of positive responses (excellent or good) maintained a high percentage of 90% for 2018 and for 2016. In 2013, the rating was 87 percent.

Paducah Fire Chief Steve Kyle said, “Today across the country, the duties of a professional fire department involve much more than responding to structure fires. Paducah’s Fire Department is no exception. We respond to structure fires in addition to emergency medical calls and various rescue situations. Furthermore, our department manages code enforcement, building construction, and fire prevention strategies for the City. Our role in the community has shifted from the sole concept of putting out fires. We are now the resource for community risk reduction.”

Earlier this year, the National Citizen Survey was mailed to 1500 randomly-selected households within the Paducah city limits, asking questions about livability (which includes city services), civic participation, governance, and various community characteristics.

In addition to reviewing the results, the city is looking at the alignment between the community's responses and the city’s strategic plan, which they adopted this year.

The city will be sharing more survey data related to other topics over the next few weeks.
