The Paducah Symphony Orchestra (PSO) announced Friday that their leadership voted not to accept the contract to operate the 2014 Beer and Wine Garden at Barbecue on the River.

Barbeque on the River, Inc. (BOTRI) presented a non-negotiable contract. PSO knew this would be the case, but the new agreement changed significantly from previous years.

Paducah Symphony Orchestra says their decision,"stemmed from a material increase in costs/loss in revenue, a loss of sharing of weather-related risks, and the loss of control of certain basic business aspects. The proposed contract also restricts the selection of vendors, insurance carrier, and PSO Chair/point representative to the discretion of BOTRI."

By the organization's calculation, the change from the 2013 agreement would have resulted in as much as triple the take-away from the bottom line in comparison to prior years.

“We certainly wanted to keep this relationship and our fundraiser healthy; we were even willing to share more of the bottom line to retain what we had, but the offer came with a firm ‘non-negotiable’ stamp on it,” said PSO Board President Roger Truitt. “The Symphony benefited from running the Beer and Wine Garden for over 15 years. However, with the 500 plus volunteer hours it takes to pull this off well, our Board had to make a decision on what level of profit made sense for the huge effort, aside from giving up control of some important internal decisions. We just could not make sense out of it without some alterations. That aside, the PSO very much wishes the Festival the greatest success for our community and the charities it benefits.”

The Beer and Wine Garden served as one of the PSO’s most significant fundraisers, alongside the Sing-Off on May 10, sponsors, and an annual fund drive.
