Police have charged the person they believe threw a newborn infant away into a Paducah dumpster with attempted murder.

Detective Matt Carter with the McCracken County Sheriff's Office says that shortly after 3:00 pm Thursday, deputies got a call that someone had discarded an infant into a dumpster at Fernwood Apartments in the area of Goodman Drive and Berger Road. While investigating, a deputy found a newborn baby, still alive, inside the dumpster.

The baby, who police say appeared to have been born hours before being thrown away, was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. The female who deputies say gave birth was transported to an area hospital for treatment.  At this time, police are not indicating that she is alleged to have committed any crime.  Deputies say a search warrant was executed at the residence, and numerous pieces of evidence were collected that pertained to the investigation.

Detectives identified a 17 year old black male as a person of interest in being the individual that had disposed of the infant. Police say they found him and he admitted to putting the baby in the dumpster. He has been charged with attempted murder, abuse and tampering with evidence.

Police say because of the ages of those involved, they cannot release further information right now, but they also say additional charges are likely.
