A West Paducah teenager was arrested after someone riding a bicycle was hit with a cup along Cairo Road in Paducah.

The McCracken County Sheriff's Office reports that a bicyclist was injured at about 7 pm Monday evening on August 18, when 19-year-old Hunter Puryear allegedly threw a 32 ounce styrofoam cup full of ice out of a moving vehicle, hitting the bicyclist. Deputies say Puryear was a passenger in a truck that was going 40 to 50 mph when the incident happened.

Deputies say the bicyclist received a laceration to his left eye during the incident. In a statement issued by the Sheriff's Office, it says in part, "Thankfully (the victim's) injuries sustained as a result of Mr. Puryear’s actions were minor in comparison to what could have easily been extremely catastrophic."

Deputies say the investigation continued through the remainder of last week in an attempt to identity the person responsible. A break in the case happened when detectives say they obtained video surveillance from Hucks convenient store that showed a vehicle and persons of interest matching the description, believed to be given by the victim.  Detectives say they identified the operator of the vehicle along with the occupants and the individual responsible for throwing the cup of ice from the moving vehicle.

Deputies say Puryear was identified based on statements obtained during the investigation. An arrest warrant was obtained for Puryear and served just after 5:30 am Tuesday morning, August 26.

Deputies say Puryear admitted to them in an interview that he intentionally threw the cup of ice at the bicyclist, for no reason other than to impress his friends.

Puryear was arrested and transported to the McCracken County Regional Jail. He was charged with Assault 4th degree, Wanton Endangerment 2nd degree, and Criminal Littering. The McCracken County Jail reports that he has already bonded out of jail.
