Traffic Backup at I-24 Ohio River Bridge Work Zone
By West Kentucky Star Staff
PADUCAH, KY / METROPOLIS, IL - At times, westbound I-24 traffic is backed up nearly 7 miles to near exit 7 due to intense work zone activity on the Interstate 24 Ohio River Bridge between Paducah and Metropolis, IL.
According to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Spokesman Keith Todd, ongoing deck rehabilitation work on the bridge by a contractor working for the Illinois Department of Transportation is at a critical stage. Intense work zone activity is likely to continue to cause traffic delays for westbound drivers traveling I-24 from Kentucky into Illinois for the next several days.
Passenger vehicles may consider using the US 45 Ohio River Bridge between Paducah and Brookport as an alternate route. As a reminder, The Brookport Bridge is restricted to vehicles less than 8 ft. wide, which prohibits most commercial trucks.
This work zone lane restriction for both eastbound and westbound traffic on Interstate 24 is expected to remain in place until around June 15.
Todd said Drivers should be alert for slowing and merging traffic as they approach this work zone at the Illinois-Kentucky State Line. There is a strictly enforced 55 mile per hour work zone speed limit. Appropriate caution is required.
