Traffic Count at New High School Provides Baseline

State highway crews are doing a traffic study in western McCracken County near the site of the new consolidated McCracken County High School that's under construction. District 1 Transportation Cabinet Spokesman Keith Todd says it gives them a data baseline from which to work. 

"We're looking at some of the more obvious routes that people will likely use to get to and from the school," Todd said. "We're looking at intersections and updating all of our numbers and our qualitative information so when we get to next fall and there are traffic changes that result from all the people going to and from the new school, we'll have updated data and be able to adjust very quickly."

"There may be some places where we may need to eventually construct a turn lane or add a traffic signal, those kinds of things."

The new school is scheduled to open to students next school year.

"People are usually pretty good about adapting on their own," Todd said. "If there are traffic backups at an intersection, they'll generally self-detour and find another way to go around. But we want to be prepared in case we do need to come in and do a study to determine if a traffic signal is warranted at a particular intersection."
