WKCTC Selected Bellwether Award Finalist

PADUCAH, KY - West Kentucky Community and Technical College’s effort to create and sustain a cultural transformation on campus has earned the college national recognition. It has been selected as a finalist for a 2013 National Bellwether Award for its effort to create and sustain acultural transformation that resulted in the college being named a top fivecommunity college by the Aspen Institute in 2011.
The Bellwether Awards are conferred by the Community College Futures Assembly, which is sponsored by the University of Florida Institute of Higher Education. The award recognizes outstanding and innovative programs and practices that other colleges mightfind worthy of replicating. By changing expectations that students have a right to fail to expecting students to succeed, WKCTC has seen student reading scores soar, persistence rates increase, and graduation rates are double the national average.
“West Kentucky is honored to be recognized by peer colleges for this prestigious national award,” WKCTC President Barbara Veazey. “We are committed to excellence and look forward to telling the college story to the Futures Assembly.”
Bellwether Award finalists are selected through national competition in three categories: Instructional Programs & Services; Planning, Governance & Finance; and Workforce Development. WKCTC is one of 10 nominees selected as national finalists in the Planning, Governance & Finance category. The college was previously a Bellwether finalist in 2005.
The 2013 Bellwether Award winners will be announced at the Community College Futures Assembly being held in Orlando, Florida, in January 2013.
