If there's something or some place you want others in our community to know about, email me ro@wkyx.com and we'll try to include it during this 365-day adventure . . .

Step back in time with a little history lesson on the lawn of the National Quilt Museum. The Trail of Discovery bronze sculptures remind onlookers of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to historic downtown Paducah.

Downtown is loaded with reminders of our rich history. These five images are: Meriwether Lewis, his Newfoundland dog, William Clark, a Native American man and child.

Sculptor George Lundeen designed these life-like statues for Bill and Meredith Schroeder who donated them to the museum. His desire to capture the significance of the subjects he sculpts was certainly achieved with these figures. Learn more from the museum's site www.quiltmuseum.org/facility.html
and then visit in person 24/7.

# 52 See great competitive county high school games during final season as rivals.

Reidland High School's 4th & Final HOGs 'n' Dogs Night marks the end of an era for local competition. This event was modeled after a similar one at SIU in Carbondale and has been a favorite in our community since 2009.  HOGS is the acronym for Harley Owners Group and DOGS is, of course, the Reidland Greyhounds. The school and community come together for the home opener with Heath High School.

Gates open at 5 this evening.  At 5:45 pm, Lew Jetton and 61 South will entertain the crowd. Texas Roadhouse has burgers, hotdogs and BBQ for sale. The Harley owners meet at Four Rivers Harley Davidson and drive with police escort, to the football field. The Harleys are on display for the crowd to enjoy during the pre-game concert. Just prior to the teams taking the field, each Harley is fired up and that signature sound rumbles the stadium.
With the consolidation of McCracken County high schools next fall, this is the last year for the HOGs and Dogs event.

# 51 Enjoy a lovely downtown park tucked in between City Hall and the Court House.

Dolly McNutt Plaza is often referred to as Fountain Park or Fountain Plaza. It's pretty! The open city block is welcoming, nicely landscaped and well kept. Three war veterans' monuments surround the center fountain. Across the street from the public library, you can't miss this park. With a few picnic tables, benches and plenty of giant oaks to shade different areas as the day progresses, it's a pleasant place to go read, have lunch or walk around the outer sidewalks. Different groups gather in the park from time to time for meetings and celebrations and it's been the location for several Taste of Paducah events through the years. If you haven't taken advantage of this downtown park, maybe you ought to take a little break and treat yourself.

# 50 What you can do is volunteer, donate, SWAP! It happens the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Sports Plex in Paducah or first Saturday each month at Mayfield YMCA.

Whatever your reason for bringing things to the swap, this is an opportunity to help others and clean out your closet or garage at the same time. You just might find something you've been looking for or need. Here's how it works: organizers welcome volunteers that arrive at noon. Drop off your "things" between 1 and 2 pm and then come right back to SWAP stuff starting at 2:30. It all wraps up at 4 pm. They call it the "Peace Love Swap of Western KY". http://www.facebook.com/peace.love.swap.ky

The Sports Plex is located on the west side of Paducah, almost to the airport at 6525 US Highway 60 West. When you enter, you pay about $5. Other than that, there's no charge for any of the things you take away. . . it's a swap! Some of the things you can bring and in turn-take home, include: clothes (all sizes and kinds), tools, kitchen utensils, books, household items, dishes, toys, movies, etc. They have lots of newborn to 24 month baby clothes now. It's a great idea and becoming more popular each month.

# 49 Adopt-a-Spot somewhere near you. A place you walk or drive by each day that needs attention may be calling your name. It's a rewarding and appreciated thing to do in Paducah.

For over a decade the Civic Beautification Board has sponsored a program encouraging individuals or business to adopt and care for public planted areas. When you think about how the City could possibly maintain every little (or large) piece of property they own, it's easy to see that they can't, anyway not well . . . not ALL of them. When you agree to take over the upkeep of a planted area, you can do it to honor or remember someone or just because you think it's a good thing to do. The CBB will have a sign made to be placed in your "spot" to identify you as its keeper and also add who you may be honoring or remembering with your efforts.

If you like to garden and you appreciate well maintained areas, you can learn more here: http://paducahky.gov/paducah/adopt-spot  If you'd like more info about the Adopt-a-Spot program or want to sign up, call: 270-217-5101 or email: romorse@comcast.net. There's no charge for the sign and it's a year-to-year agreement. The CBB will place the sign as soon as it is made.

# 48 Paducah Rec Center stays busy with all kinds of activities. Monday nights you can play wiffle ball.

Paducah is blessed to have an active and creative Parks and Recreation Dept. If you've ever looked at what all they offer and how busy they stay, it's pretty amazing they can keep the pace. Mondays at 6 pm, they are offering a coed indoor wiffle ball league. Players have to be at least 14. A minimum of two females have to be on the court at all times. A team can have as few as seven players or as many as 15. The cost for the season is $15 a person or $100 if you sign up a whole team. Call 270-444-8508 for more info or email questions to: parkinfo@paducahky.gov

# 47 The weather is starting to be more enjoyable-perfect time to go horseback riding. You don't have a horse? You can still learn to ride.

One of Paducah's premier horse training facilities is The Four Rivers Sport Horse Center on Lovelaceville Road. It's a new state of the art facility where you can experience horseback riding in a modern safe environment. The first of its kind in western Kentucky, the project has been planned by equine experts with a lifetime of experience. They have events for those who show horses as well as the pleasure and trail riders. They also serve as hosts to the United States Pony Club. Their youth and adult riding programs are strong. The Center also provides coaching for competition and will help facilitate trips to shows in our region. The lesson starts from the time you get your horse from the stall, to grooming, tacking, riding, and putting him back up. Lessons are available from their experienced staff. If this sounds interesting to you, you can get more info by calling 270-554-3774 or view a lesson in progress: tip://fourriverssporthorse.com/services/lessons

# 46 Some of our local restaurants have live entertainment, especially on weekends. Paducah is home to some tremendous entertainers and Reggie Lafaye is one of those talents. He's playing his sax tonight at Ristorante di Fratelli, 211 Broadway from 6-9 pm.

If you appreciate a great sax player, Reggie will not disappoint you. He's played saxaphone since he was a child and as an adult with professionals around the country. Paducah is fortunate that he now calls our river town home. Lafaye has performed professionally for more than 40 years and has a style that is smooth and well, just quite entertaining. Learn more: http://www.reggielafaye.com

# 45 It's just standing there! 24/7 you can visit the old Mikado steam engine, the last Iron Horse used by Illinois Central Rail Road.

It's a must see for the old and young who are fascinated with old steam engines. Visitors and locals can often be seen viewing and taking photos in front of the antique engine, baggage car and caboose that serve as a memorial to the passage of the steam age. It's been around for decades. I remember it in the 70's parked in Barkley Park, where our Convention Center and Expo Center are currently located. It was built in 1923 and moved to its present location in late 1990's. In great need of a new coat of paint, the engine and cars will hopefully get the attention they deserve sooner rather than later. Here's an interesting and informative site designed by a fan of our steam locomotive 1518: http://www.modelgeek.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=1832

# 42 Anyone can do this! You don't have to be in great shape. It's a whole team effort, rowing together, that makes it possible and a blast. Paducah's first ever Dragon Boat Race on the riverfront is September 22, and you won't want to miss being right in the middle of the fun.

We're approaching the absolute last call for new teams to sign on. You'll need a total of 21 people to agree and pitch in some $ to make it happen.
Call 270-575-9958 now for information to create your boat team. This riverfront festival is being organized to benefit the River Discovery Center's educational programs. What a perfect match this is. Pull together your friends at work or church and be part of this awesome experience at the foot of Broadway. A video is worth a thousand words, right? just look at this short vidoe and tell me you're not jumping at the chance to be part of it all:

# 41 If you truly are trying to figure out something to do and would like to make a positive difference in someone's life, right here in Paducah, volunteer a few hours to help out at the Community Kitchen or Clothes Closet weekdays downtown.

It's one of those opportunities that surprisingly ends up blessing you. Plug in and volunteer your time feeding an average of 900 people a week. Sally will put you to work any week day from 11 am to 1 pm. The kitchen and dining room are located at 1225 Broadway behind Hippos. There's also a Clothes Closet next door that provides clothing for about 200 men, women and children each week. The food and clothes are all free to those in need. At this time there's a need for greeters, food handlers, servers, preparers, clean-up, Community Closet desk workers, clothing sorters, prayer partners, along with financial support, food donations and supplies. Feel free to come down and serve during your lunch hour and take the opportunity to give an hour or meal out of your day to bless others.

To volunteer, sign up here: http://www.community-ministries.org/contact.php or call Rebecca at 270-519-9768 or 270-898-8399 or their office at 270-575-3400 for information on how you can help share the love and compassion of Jesus Christ in our community-that's simply what this ministry is all about. This is something to do that makes a positive difference-for sure.

August 12
# 40 It's the perfect day to worship and rest. Hopefully you'll be able to do both today. Many work at their jobs so rest and worship have to be shuffled around your obligations on Sundays.

This morning is refreshingly beautiful, such a relief from the 100 degree days we've endured the past couple of months. Take a walk, worship as you stroll your neighborhood or regular walking route. Then plan time to worship with a group at your church, temple or with your home group. If you don't have a specific place to worship, here's a list - all denominations:   top://petcocks.areaconnect.com/churches.tom.  Your preferred day of worship may be Saturday or another day or best of all - everyday.

# 39 Spend a fun evening with the Cruisers - good times in the streets of downtown Paducah.

If you've missed all the other Saturday nights in downtown Paducah, this is the one you need to make. When you hear great music, is it hard to keep from dancing and singing? Tonight's your chance to dance the night away in the streets of downtown Paducah-and there's no charge. The sounds of classic rock, blues and soul will rock the riverfront as The Cruisers entertain from 7 - 10 pm. During Live on Broadway, these talented men will have you all smiles. They're one of Paducah's favorites and always draw a crowd. Plus, it looks like the weather is going to be perfect-finally!

These guys have been playing together - well for as long as I can remember. They are smooth and fun and you'll enjoy every minute during their Live on Broadway concert tonight. This is a Saturday that will definitely be worth your time to head downtown.

Cruiser band members pose for the camera on the Ohio River with Paducah skyline in background in the photo on the top left (l to r): Keith Culp - Bass Guitar & Vocals, David "Herb" Estes - Hammond B3 & Vocals, Jim Long - Saxophone & Harmonica, J.P. Kelly - Keyboards & Vocals, Ron Steakley - Drums & Vocals, John Craft - Guitar & Vocals

# 38 You see the downtown trolley shuttling back and forth between Lower Town and downtown, but have you ever taken 30 minutes to hop on and see the sites from a totally different perspective?

The downtown trolley drives the neighborhood streets of Lower Town and downtown picking up anyone who hails a ride. Every 30 minutes from 8 am until just before 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday and Saturday from 9 am until 4:30 pm, you can board and ride for free. That's right - for free. It truly is like stepping back in time and relaxing while the driver chauffeurs you around town. It always stops at the Quilt Museum and the Texaco Station in the heart of Lower Town. Park anywhere along the route, waive your hand at the driver, go for a ride and you'll be back in 30 minutes.

August 9
# 37 Check out Paducah Improv, local hilarious talent that sold out last time they performed at the Carson Center.

Paducah Improv is a local improv company made up of talent with extensive stage and comedy experience. Directed by Eric Hobbs and produced by Chuck Tate, this week's performance of "NO REGRETS" promises to entertain a mature audience, probably not for children (because of the potential subject matter). Tickets are $5 (www.thecarsoncenter.org.) for general admission seating and they will offer a cash bar. It starts at 8 pm Saturday night in the Myre River Room. It's a fast-moving, funny, short–form improvised show based on audience suggestions and participation. This energetic, edgy and hip show will stretch the imagination.

August 8
# 36 If you've ever thought about, dreamed of or hoped to make your own movie, this is the perfect time to pursue that challenge.

The Paducah 48 Hour Film Project gives hopeful movie makers the opportunity to create a film in one weekend. That will all happen in downtown Paducah this weekend starting and ending in the Maiden Alley Cinema. All of the films will be viewed at the downtown cinema in the near future. Other events are centered around this project. They are listed in the link below. Specific guidelines are in place to direct Paducah filmmakers as they take to the streets this weekend. There are still a few slots available. # 35 Paducah is blessed with an awesome bike shop that organizes and encourages year-round cycling, not only in town but throughout the region.

Martha and Hutch at BikeWorld have been organizing, supporting and selling bikes in Paducah for 25 years. If you're not into biking but are thinking fall is coming and the weather will be perfect for pedaling around town and thru the countryside, you are right. Even the mornings and evenings now are bearable. Riding with friends or a group of other bikers is a healthy and entertaining sport. Not all communities have a dedicated group like this bunch to cheerlead and organized year-round biking. We are indeed blessed.

Weekday mornings at 6 there's a group ride (18-20 miles). Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 6 there are rides in different parts of town and the county. Go to www.bikeworldky.com and click on Rides and Events. This site will keep you updated on biking opportunities.

The big RACK (Ride ACross Kentucky) is coming up on August 18th. Riders leave from BikeWorld, 809 Joe Clifton Dr., at 8 am. This annual border to border bike pilgrimage is not for the faint of heart. Temperatures are usually in the 90's. The ride is across the state and back-108 miles. The historical challenge for the strong hearted (and steel stomached) is to make the bike ride, eat your fill of the Keg’s special barbecued ribs, down a brew or two, then ride back. There's no entry fee. This ride is a gift from the BikeWorld owners and staff. It's a well marked route, and riders not up to riding both ways may opt to reserve a seat in a BikeWorld provided vehicle for the ride home. Call the store 270-442-0751 and get your name on the list or have a friend meet you in Fulton to bring you back home. Riders should be self sufficient. In other words, be capable of changing a flat and carry the nourishment to see you through, or a cell phone to call home. To most enjoy this event, you should ride 15 mph +. Yes, helmets are required.

# 33 See for yourself why Paducah is known around the world as "Quilt City USA"

People from all 50 states and over 40 countries come to Paducah to visit and experience quilting at our National Quilt Museum-not just during the annual American Quilter's Society Show and Contest each spring, but year-round. On the corner of 2nd and Jefferson, it's been a downtown landmark since 1991. Nationally recognized as an art museum that exhibits the finest quilting and fiber art in the world, the museum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kentucky. The exhibits and programs have been recognized in dozens of national publications including Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, Southern Living, and many more. The St. Louis Post Dispatch said the following about our museum, "It's not that different than going to the art museum in Chicago...It's all so unexpected."

Showing today from 1-5 pm in three galleries are:
Oh, Wow! The Miniature Quilt Collection
The National Quilt Museum Collection
The Exquisite Stitch: 200 Years of Hand Quilting

# 32 Some weekends there are so many interesting things to do in Paducah that it's a challenge to decide how to spend your time. You can't possibly do it all. This is one of those weekends.

Each year there's an Emancipation Celebration and Homecoming in Paducah the week of August 8th - with a parade in the morning and festivities all afternoon in the Robert Coleman Park, programs at the Hotel Metropolitan, winding up with a dance at Players Bluegrass Downs. www.paducahky.gov

The first weekend in August is the Fancy Farm Picnic. It's not IN Paducah, but it might as well be, as hundreds in our town flock to the neighboring community of Fancy Farm to get their fair share of BBQ pork and mutton, take in the hot political speaking and be part of all that the picnic offers. http://www.fancyfarm.net

Downtown will be hoppin' at night during 'Live on Broadway' with lots of outside entertainment and folks visiting on the street corners. http://www.paducahalliance.org/events/live-on-broadway

Add in all the attractions that are open and special events throughout the town, it's a tough decision to pick and choose what to do. A local website that lists what's going on day to day is www.iListPaducah.com. There is definitely lots happening in this river town.

# 31 Listen to music, stories and poetry read and sung by the writers on Friday nights at Etcetera Coffeehouse in Lower Town.

Paducah Writers' Group is the featured entertainment on Friday evenings at Etcetera Coffeehouse, 320 North 6th Street in Lower Town. During their Open Mic Night from 8-10:30 pm you'll be surrounded by interesting talent. It's a laid back and comfortable way to spend an evening. Etcetera's coffee and bubble tea are their main stay but on Fridays the storytellers, songwriters and poets take center stage and it's a fun time. You might even get inspired enough to take a turn on the mic and share some of your own original creations. There's no cover charge, just show up and be as involved as you choose. Writers are invited to come perform original music or do readings and other performances, or just kick back and listen to members of the creative group. Find out more: www.etccoffee.com.

# 30 Volleyball is alive and well in Paducah thanks to a group of volleyball players who are serious about the sport.

Competitive volleyball is relatively new to the western Kentucky area, compared to other parts of the state and country, so there aren't many adults in our area who grew up playing the sport competitively. The Western Kentucky Volleyball Club for Adults consists of a few players originally from outside our region who are trying to recruit other experienced players and help teach the game to newcomers who want to play more competitively. The club is all about expanding the sport of volleyball in our region and encouraging improving the fundamental skills among its members. Their members include several current and former high school, club, and collegiate coaches who are serious about having fun and helping others improve.

Year-round they have an open-gym night that players of any experience level can attend. Open-gyms feature pickup games with mini practice sessions b between the games. Their committee members and more advanced players teach individual and team concepts to the newcomers during those sessions. Right now their open-gym night is being hosted by the Paducah Parks and Rec Department at the City Rec Center at 1527 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Paducah Mondays or Thursdays from 6:30 to 9 pm. However, that time and location may change throughout the year. Typically the games are co-ed on a men's net, so men and women are welcome.

In addition to the open-gym night, when they have enough participants, the club hosts other intermediate and advanced games at different locations in Paducah, Mayfield, and occasionally, Murray.  Their advanced group consists of current and former Division I college players, as well as high school and college coaches from our region.  The group can offer competitive play and a place to improve for all players, whether they are novice or very experienced. They keep club members informed concerning volleyball camps and tournaments in our region and hope to build enough participation in our area to support more camps, leagues, and tournaments for competitive adult players.

If you're interested, email wkvballclub@gmail.com to get on their email list, or come out to open-gym and check it out. Keep up with their events on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Western-Kentucky-Adult-Volleyball-Club/311618685561235

# 29 There's a lot more than just books to check out at Paducah's Cool Public Library.

Some folks hang out at the library to cool off and simply get in out of the heat, read, relax and learn the day away. Others are there because it's a cool and exciting place, with lots happening. It doesn't matter how old or young you are, there's something going on at the McCracken County Public Library that will interest you. Located across from Dolly McNutt Plaza and a block away from City Hall and the County Court House, it's user friendly both inside and out, plus they are open seven days a week. The reading garden on its east side is a quiet and shady place to enjoy whatever you may be reading (when the weather is nice). My grandchildren and I go every other week to check out books and DVDs and the five-year-old spends a little time on the computers. She's getting her very own library card next week and she thinks it's a big deal. I can't begin to list all that's going on at our library, but their website is current and deep. You can learn a ton - more than humanly possible to remember by simply visiting their website: www.mclib.net. Programs are free and open to the public. Paducah is blessed to have this outstanding public facility full of learning opportunities.
