Zumba Fundraiser Saturday Benefits Teacher's Rehab
By WestKyStar Staff
PADUCAH, KY - A Zumba fundraiser will be held Saturday at McNabb Elementary School's Gymnasium, to benefit a teacher's rehabilitation.
The event is from 10:00 - noon, with a $5 admission fee. Water will be provided, and door prizes will be given away, too. All proceeds will help Elizabeth Azar.
Elizabeth just celebrated her 29th birthday, but is also celebrating the fact that she is alive. Engaged last August and teaching at McNabb, while working on her Master’s degree through Murray State University, her life changed on November 23rd, 2011.
Azar awakened early that morning with pain in one arm, which quickly spread along with loss of feeling. By the time she got to the hospital she could not move her legs, and learned she was going into congestive heart failure. A few days later another episode occurred, this one leaving her paralyzed from the neck down. She was finally diagnosed with Arteriovenous Malformation, or AVM, which is a tangled cluster of arteries and veins. When an AVM bleeds, damage is done in that area, and hers is in the cervical part of her spine, causing her paralysis.
Azar has received treatment and rehab at several facilities, and has full movement of both arms and one hand, with some movement in the other hand. She has returned home, but rehab centers in the area are not equipped for what she needs. Proceeds from the event will help Azar purchase a MotoMed Viva 2 cycling rehabilitation machine to keep her legs exercised, which is essential to her long-term goals of walking and teaching school again.
