Baptist Health Paducah is the region’s first hospital to offer three-dimensional mammography to detect the most subtle signs of early breast cancer.

Three-dimensional mammograms are the most advanced breast imaging technology, providing more detailed images of breast tissue for earlier and more accurate cancer detection while reducing the chance of being called back for a second look. “We can find cancer as small as a BB pellet,” said radiologist Jennifer Brien, MD.  “This tool allows us to look at different levels of breast tissue rather than all the tissue compressed together. It detects some cancers that a 2-D mammogram might miss and reduces the number of false-positives, which can cause undue concern and additional screenings for women.”

One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. It is the most common cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death after lung cancer. Because early detection improves survival rates, the American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms beginning at 40, or earlier if there is a family history of breast cancer.

As sophisticated as 3-D mammography is, the screening seems no different to the patient. “Women can be in and out in about 20 minutes,” Dr. Brien said. “There is no reason for women over 40 to delay this important screening.”

Kelley Austin, 41, of Paducah, who has a family history of breast cancer, recently had a 3-D mammogram. Austin said the experience was no different from a traditional mammogram, but she is thankful for the new technology. “I’m all for anything new and improved to help an unsuspecting woman find out she has breast cancer.”

Baptist’s radiology services are accredited by the American College of Radiology, and the hospital has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, a distinction awarded to just the top 3 percent in the nation. Breast imaging services are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy.
