Ex-Marion Official Pleads Not Guilty to Embezzling
MARION, IL - The former longtime manager of Marion's water department has pleaded not guilty to federal charges that accuse her of stealing more than $500,000 from the southern Illinois city.
Linda Heyde made an appearance Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Benton on three embezzlement counts related to the fiscal years 2009 and 2012.
Heyde managed the water department from 1996 until last year, when she was fired after suspicious transactions were discovered in her department.
The indictment alleges police secretly installed video cameras in Heyde's office and recorded thefts. The indictment contends investigators confronted her afterward and she admitted stealing funds.
Heyde is free on her own recognizance. A judge ordered her to stay away from any gambling site and to surrender her passport.
