Former Navy Chaplain Pleads Guilty to Sex Charges

MARION, IL - A former Navy assistant chaplain from Marion, IL has pleaded guilty to several charges, including sexual exploitation of a minor.
30-year-old Matthew Lee Staszak, an Assistant Chaplain with the United States Navy, formerlystationed in North Carolina, but from Marion, IL, pleaded guilty in federal district court Monday to Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, Travel with the Intent to Engage in Illicit Sexual Conduct, and Failure to Appear, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton, announced today.
Police say Staszak filmed himself engaged in sexual intercourse with a minor, who was 16 years old in June or July 2011.
Staszak also allegedly traveled from North Carolina to Williamson County, Illinois, to engage in sexual intercourse with a minor in May 2011 who was 15 years old at the time.
At sentencing, Staszak faces a term in prison ranging from not less than fifteen years butnot more than thirty years, a fine up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of not less than five years to life on Count 1. Staszak faces a term of not more than 30 years, a fine up to$250,000, and a term of supervised release of not less than five years to life on both Counts 2 and 3. On Count 4, Staszak faces a term of imprisonment of not more than 10 years, a fine up to$250,000, or both, and a term of supervised release of not more than three years.
Staszak must register as a sex offender as a condition of his supervised release.
Sentencing is scheduled for December 6, 2013, in Benton, IL
