40th Fort Massac Encampment This Weekend

METROPOLIS, IL - See what life was like back in the early years of our nation at the 40th annual Fort Massac Encampment at Fort Massac State Park in Metropolis this weekend, Oct. 19 and 20th.

See and hear the cannons as you watch reentactments and tour campsites of the troops, and try the variety of  foods and activities that will be displayed. It's an old-fashioned crafts fair that also honors the area's frontier history.  

Here is the weekend's schedule:

Saturday,  Oct. 19th

10:00 am: Posting of Colours at forts
10:30 am: 42nd Royal Highlanders Bagpipe Band
10:30 am - 4 pm: Storytellers, Face Painting & Magic Show, at children’s area
11:00 am - 3 pm: Music of 18th Century by  various entertainers
11:30 am: Voyageurs canoe landing at riverfront
 1:00 pm: Fashion Show at small stage
 3:00 pm: Mock Battle and Military Tactical Demonstration,
 5:00 pm: Military Retreat Closing  Ceremony at Forts

Sunday,  Oct. 20th

 9:00 am: Church Service
10:00 am: Posting of Colours at forts

10:30 am - 4:00 pm: Storytellers, Face Painting and Magic Show at children’s activity    area
11:00 am - 3:00 pm: Music of 18th Century performed by various entertainers
11:30 am: Voyageurs canoe landing at riverfront
 1:00 pm: Fashion Show, at small stage
 3:00 pm: Mock Battle and Military Tactical Demonstration, at battlefield
 4:30 pm: Military Retreat Closing Ceremony at forts

The Encampment includes people portraying and demonstrating French, British, Colonial, Spanish and other military units; buck skinners and traders who explored and traded in the area; Native Americans; music groups; food vendors, and craftsmen.

The reenactments won't portray any specific battle, since none of the French, British or American soldiers who were stationed at the fort ever encountered enemy fire there. But they show how typical battles of period would have looked.

Parking and shuttle service is offered from the field next to the park’s trout pond on U.S. Highway 45.
