A former temporary employee of the city of Metropolis is under arrest after allegedly stealing gasoline from pumps reserved for city vehicles.

The suspect is identified as 43-year-old Frederick D. Nackley of Joppa. He is charged with felony theft of government property as well as traffic violations.

Nackley was allegedly driving a white van when he was arrested shortly before 4:00 Wednesday morning. Metropolis Police had previously received reports of gasoline being pumped into a white van from city pumps. A police officer reportedly observed Nackley driving the wrong way down a one-way street, North Avenue. He then reportedly failed to stop for a stop sign at 8th and Ferry Streets. Additionally, he was found to be in possession of a key to the city gas pumps.

Metropolis Chief of Police Harry Masse, and Mayor Billy McDaniel say they will not tolerate anyone stealing resources paid for by taxpayers.
