By West Kentucky Star Staff
WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL - An O'Fallon man was killed Tuesday morning in a crash on I-57.

The Illinois State Police says their preliminary investigation shows traffic on I-57 North was backed up in Williamson County due to a construction project at mile post 48. Shortly after 10 a.m., a semi driven by Jagpreet Singh of Lenexa, KS was northbound, followed by another vehicle being driven by 57-year-old Wayne Maxwell of O'Fallon. Both vehicles were slowed for the traffic backup when another semi, driven by 62-year-old Willie Shelby of Madison, MS struck the rear of Maxwell's vehicle, pushing it into the rear of Singh's semi.

Maxwell was pronounced dead at the scene by the Williamson County Coroner.

Shelby was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash. Police say more charges are possible. The investigation is continuing by the ISP Crash Reconstruction Team.

Northbound traffic was diverted off of the interstate at Exit 45 until around 2:45 p.m.
