Man Gets New Trial, Prosecutor Made Racial Remarks

A black man from Marion, IL who was sentenced to 85 years in prison will get a new trial after his attorney complained about racial remarks made by the prosecutor.
 
Williamson County State's Attorney Charles Garnati in a court filing on Monday admitted to an error in his prosecution of Marcus Marshall. But The Southern Illinoisan newspaper in Carbondale reported that the prosecutor didn't specify what mistake he'd made.
 
Marshall was convicted in 2011 of murder.
 
Garnati said during closing arguments at Marshall's trial that Marion's small black community had "some very good law-abiding citizens" but "in the black community that is where they keep their handguns ... in their waistbands."
 
The prosecutor also made reference to "our white world" as he addressed the all-white jury.
