A new prosecutor has been appointed to handle the case against a former athletic trainer who is accused of the sexual assaults of two students.

On Tuesday, Massac County State's Attorney Patrick Windhorst asked Circuit Judge Joe Leberman to appoint a special prosecutor, and recused himself from the case against Felicia Williams-Watson.

Windhorst released a statement explaining that the family of one of the victims has filed a civil lawsuit, and has named the Massac County School District as a defendant. Since his brother is an administrator in the school district and the outcome of the criminal case could affect any civil proceedings, Windhorst is recusing himself, "to avoid any potential appearance of impropriety."

On Wednesday, the Williamson County State's Attorney office was appointed to the criminal case.

The family of one victim filed a lawsuit in July against Williams-Watson, but also claimed the school district was negligent in their hiring and monitoring of her as an athletic trainer.

Williams-Watson is charged with four counts of criminal sexual assault and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. The charges stem from alleged sexual relationships with two male students at the school, ages 15 and 17.
