A Metropolis police officer will not face criminal charges in a suspect's death after a southern Illinois prosecutor deemed the shooting as an appropriate use of deadly force.

Sgt. Cody Brown killed 63-year-old Donald Hicks on April 2 after police received a call about a suicidal man threatening to shoot himself.

WSIL-TV reports Massac County State's Attorney Patrick Windhorst has determined that the fatal shooting was justified because Hicks pointed a gun at officers after a car chase and refused to surrender.

Authorities say police first attempted to subdue Hicks with a stun gun.
