The American Red Cross asks blood and platelet donors to help prevent a summer shortage by rolling up a sleeve today at the Cherry Civic Center in Paducah.

The 31st annual Paducah summer blood appeal concludes today, and local Red Cross director Anthony Tinnin is looking for hundreds of donors again this year. "We need to see about 800 to 900  people in these two days.  The summertime is tough, as far as blood donations -- school is out, people's routines are disrupted by vacations, and blood supplies get dangerously low."

Donors can stop in today between 7am and 7pm at the Cherry Civic Center, where extra staff will be on hand to collect donations. As long as you have not donated blood in the past 56 days, and meet minimum physical requirements, you are eligible to donate.

Donors will get a free t-shirt for their efforts, as well as a free Expressway car wash.

With blood and platelet donation appointments currently lower than what is needed to maintain a sufficient blood supply, donors of all blood types are urged to schedule an appointment now, especially those with types O negative, B negative and A negative.

The Red Cross must collect 15,000 blood donations every day to meet the needs of patients across the country. This can be challenging during the summer months of June, July and August, when an average of two fewer donors schedule an appointment to give blood at each Red Cross blood drive than what patients need.

This seasonal challenge can be overcome if just two more donors – above what is expected – make an appointment and give blood at each Red Cross blood drive the rest of the summer.

Visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to find a nearby blood donation opportunity or schedule an appointment.

Other upcoming blood donation opportunities are scheduled through the month of July:
