CARBONDALE, IL - Journalism and photojournalism students at SIU-Carbondale have compiled a book that chronicles the events of February 29 tornado in Harrisburg and Ridgway, IL.
"4:56 a.m. The Story Of The Feb. 29, 2012 Tornado," is an 80-page book containing 67 full-color photographs, showing the magnitude of the disaster, as well as the courage and perseverance of survivors. It will be available for sale beginning August 19 at the Harrisburg District Library on Walnut Street. A reception will be held that day from 2-4 pm.
Books will sell for $10 each, and proceeds will go to agencies that are assisting with the continued recovery. Students and faculty involved hope to raise between $10,000-$15,000.
SIU Chancellor Rita Cheng told the SIU Saluki Times that the book is full of images that remind everyone of the extent of the damage, but also the courage of friends and neighbors. She added that students gained many valuable insights, which will serve them well in their careers. Cheng said many in the community donated time or resources to help, so that the book can benefit recovery efforts.
Advertising and journalism students also worked on the book, including its design.
