MARION, IL - Two southern Illinois law enforcement officers were injured Tuesday while removing debris from the road.

The accident happened at 3:22 pm near mile marker 8 on Interstate 57. Mounds Police Officer Lyle Womack and Pulaski Deputy Kent Ray had stopped their vehicles in the right-hand lane with their emergency lights on while they removed debris. A semi tractor-trailer driven by 27-year-old Yusuf Ali of St. Louis did not change lanes in time, and struck the Mounds Police SUV with Womack still inside. The truck then hit Ray as he tried to run away. After the collision, the truck ran off the Interstate and caught fire in the median.

Both injured officers were taken to St. Francis Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Ali was not hurt, but was cited for failure to reduce speed and avoid an accident, and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
