The heavily used bridge between Cairo and Wickliffe is closed due to flooding.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says rising floodwaters forced the bridge to close at 4 pm.
The bridge will likely remain closed until about February 28th, but may be closed even longer if additional rainfall keeps floodwaters elevated. Two to three inches of rain is forecast for the area over the weekend.
Since travelers will face a detour of about 80 miles from Wickliffe to Cairo using the I-24 bridge, transportation engineers have placed message boards, barricades, and other traffic control equipment at key locations to notify drivers of the closure.
