10th Annual Polar Plunge and 5k Saturday
By West Kentucky Star Staff
GILBERTSVILLE - The 10th Annual Polar Plunge into Kentucky Lake and 5k run presented by Peel & Holland are being held this Saturday.

More than 500 people are expected to return to the park and take a frigid dip in the lake. Participants can register and raise money on-line at the link below.

The Plunge works just like a walk-a-thon, with Polar Bears each raising a “bear” minimum of $75 ($50 for those between 6-18 years old) to earn the right to plunge. Every Polar Bear receives an official Polar Plunge T-shirt and Polar Bear Club Certificate, but participants who raise more money can earn even better rewards.

This year's event will again feature the Polar 5k ($40 entry fee), which will run through Kentucky Dam Village State Park the same day as the plunge.

Also back this year is the Polar Triple Crown Challenge, which includes three challenges for the bravest folks: the Polar 5k, the traditional “Jump-In” from a dock, and a “Run-In” from the old beach area.

There will be prizes given for top fundraising individuals and top fundraising groups. There will also be the annual costume contest.

People who want to support the Polar Plunge, but not jump or run can register as a “Virtual Plunger” and raise money. They receive the Polar Plunge T-shirt and are eligible for all other fundraising prizes.

Event Organizer Chuck Williams said the Polar Plunge is extremely important to all of the athletes who compete locally in the Special Olympics.

"We've got almost 200 athletes and unified partners now, 120 athletes in 13 different programs. That's really the reason we're there. It's a lot of fun, we have a great time with it, but it's really about raising money for that need." He said.

Events begin on Friday, with Polar Plunge 5k packet pick up and Polar Plunge Early Check-In from 4-6 p.m. at the Kentucky Dam Village Convention Center. Participants can turn in all remaining money, get their number and/or wristband they will need to participate on Saturday, pick up their T-shirt and select other fundraising prizes while avoiding lines on Plunge day.

Polar Plunge/5k Race Day check-in will open at 8 a.m. Opening ceremonies and costume contest for both events will start at 10. The 5k start will take place at 10:45, with the Plunge getting underway at 11:15. It should end about 1 p.m.

Last year, the Western KY Polar Plunge raised more than $99,000. All funds raised by the event go to support the more than 9,300 children and adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics programs in Kentucky and the more than 2,000 volunteers who help run those programs statewide.
