KY 95 in Marshall County was closed to through traffic for several hours Monday night around 9:30 due to a head-on collision that required several to be airlifted from the scene.

Three helicopters with Air Evac and PHI Air Medical crews were summoned to the scene of a head-on collision in Calvert City after reports of a two-car wreck involving several area college students in the area just south of the Calvert City Drive-In and near the North Marshall Middle School.

According to the Marshall County Sheriff's Department, 24-year-old Cory A. Burkeen, of Gilbertsville, was traveling north on Hwy 95 while 20-year-old Lake H. McGregor, of Benton, was traveling south on Hwy 95.

Maggie K. Adams 19, of Calvert City, was a passenger with McGregor who advised that Burkeen swerved suddenly into the path of McGregor. McGregor swerved to try to avoid a collision but could not and the vehicles collided nearly head on.

Marshall County Sheriff’s Department public information officer Trista Lovett said Burkeen may face charges based on toxicology reports. Blood samples taken at Vanderbilt await processing.

McGregor and Adams were both taken by family to the Emergency Room for their injuries. 19-year-old Landon T. Lovett, of Benton, and 20-year-old Shane D. McKenty, of Benton, were both passengers in the McGregor vehicle as well. Burkeen, Lovett and McKenty were all taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Burkeen was in good condition Tuesday night, while McKenty and Lovett were listed as critical.

Lovett, no relation to Landon T. Lovett, said Landon is the daughter of Trent Lovett, superintendent of Marshall County Schools.

“We think McGregor and his passengers may have been going to a friend’s house,” Trista Lovett said. “Burkeen had the bottles in his car, but we are unsure at this time where they came from.”

Reconstruction officer Deputy Nathan Maxlow is working the reconstruction of the collision.
