Several churches represented western Kentucky at last weekend's rally in the state capitol in support of three county clerks.

Pastor Ronnie Stinson of Trace Creek Baptist Church said they took 4 buses to Frankfort, with a few others driving themselves, so between 185-190 people traveled to the rally. He said a couple of other Graves County churches took about 50 people each, and he saw others from the area at the event. But Stinson estimated that the majority of the 6,000-7,000 attendees were from the Louisville, Lexington, and Frankfort area.

Stinson said he organized the trip after he found out about the rally from the Family Foundation. He said he believes the rally sent messages to the clerks and to elected officials.

"I believe that Kim Davis and Casey Davis received support for it as well, but I think it's bigger than those two individuals. So, for us, it was for the lawmakers to understand our concern about what we feel is an infringement on our religious liberties and freedom of conscience," Stinson said.

Stinson said the event was very encouraging and hopeful, and he was glad to see some Kentucky leaders there voicing their support for religious liberty and freedom of conscience, but there was also a bit of frustration, since most there felt some people's freedoms were being ignored or hindered by the government.

Stinson said he didn't personally see any kind of counter-protests at the rally.

He said he's heard about some upcoming smaller rallies across the state, possibly in October, to continue raising awareness of the issue.

Kent Ostrander from the Family Foundation of Kentucky said there will be a welcoming rally in Paducah when Casey Davis concludes his cross-state bicycle ride in support of Kim Davis, who has been sued for refusing to issue any marriages licenses - gay or straight - in Rowan County. He estimated that ride should conclude in the next 8-10 days, but location and other details haven't been finalized.

Ostrander confirmed Thursday that some other events are in planning stages, too. When that information is available, it will be added to this article, or will be published separately.
