Pancakes, Parade Wrap Tater Day Festivities

BENTON, KY - The 171st annual Tater Day festival concludes today in downtown Benton.

Two events wrap up a full weekend of activities this morning, beginning with the Benton Lions Club pancake breakfast from 7-10 am at Benton Elementary School. Afterward, thousands will gather for the Tater Day parade beginning at 11am.

Cooperative weekend weather made for good crowds all weekend at the various vendor booths and at grandstand activities in H.H. Lovett Park, including go kart racing Friday night, and demolition derby on Saturday.

Ever since 1842 when Marshall County was founded, local folk began to come to town to buy, sell and trade various crops and commodities, including sweet potato slips. The social part of the gathering also became a celebration of spring's arrival. Tater Day is considered to be the longest continuous trade day in the United States.
