Board Sets New Sale Date for Cuba Elementary
By Joe Jackson
CUBA, KY - The Graves County Board of Education in a special, called meeting Thursday night voted 3-1 to set a new date for the sale at auction of Cuba Elementary School and its adjoining property. Kelly Whitaker voted no. The new auction date will be at 3:30 pm July 2.
On Wednesday, the Franklin Circuit Court judge hearing the case asked both sides to submit arguments in the case as a whole. The judge intends to rule on the matter, following a hearing now scheduled for June 27 in Frankfort.
The school board had originally planned to auction off the school and its adjoining property on June 18. The board previously had declared the building and land as surplus property. That was after voting to close the school earlier in the school year, due to low enrollment over the course of several years.
A lawsuit was then filed against the Graves County Board of Education and Kentucky Department of Education by a group of parents and concerned citizens who said the local school board didn't go through the proper procedures to close the school.
