The Graves County Board of Education at its February business meeting honored Gibson’s Pharmacy owner and ardent supporter of the Graves County Schools Bill Brown by presenting him with the board’s “Friend of Education Award.”

Superintendent Kim Dublin and board members each read highlights of Brown’s contributions in surprising Brown. Dublin said he’d been invited to the meeting to share his advice for students and that she hopes to take him up on that possibility at another time.

Among the board’s comments were these:

“Many people don’t know about the good things Bill Brown does and nobody can know about all of them… largely because he helps and supports and gives quietly, humbly, and often anonymously! And whether those who receive his gifts know that they originated with him or not, they benefit greatly because he gives generously…

“We should say right now that while this award honors Bill Brown, he’d be the first to tell you that his wife, Susie, has been a tremendous support in all he’s done, including support for our schools. So, we certainly thank her as well…” Susie Brown also was in attendance at the meeting.

“…(After listing numerous contributions to athletic programs…) “Athletics isn’t the only area where Bill has assisted. He’s helped in many ways, including with academics…

“Since he has contributed so much financially, administrators sometimes have refrained from asking, because he is asked so often. However, when the chips were down and something really was needed, they always knew he’d come through in the clutch. All they had to do was ask.

“His giving isn’t limited to money, either. Bill and his wife, Susie, have volunteered to roll up their sleeves and work events, when that was needed. He has given numerous high school students part-time jobs throughout the years and many have continued to work for him through their college years…

“So, tonight we honor Bill Brown for his generous spirit and for the numerous and significant ways that spirit has manifested itself in real world, practical ways, helping his fellow man, his community, and tonight we especially honor his tremendous contributions to the Graves County Schools and specifically to Graves County High School.

“From everyone in the Graves County Schools, we sincerely thank you for who you are and for what you’ve done and continue to do to make this school system, community and world a better place."
