A judge has sent the case of Michael Joseph Burke, charged with killing his mother to a grand jury.

Calloway District Judge Randall Hutchens on Thursday found probable cause to give the panel the case of 34-year-old Burke.

Police say Burke stabbed his mother, 55-year-old Karen McClellan, at least 25 times on July 9. The Paducah Sun reported that Murray Police Officer Angel Clere testified that Burke told officers he knew why they were at his home, saying "Because I killed my mother."

In court Thursday, Burke appeared to have been crying as officers led him out after his hearing. Burke's next pre-trial hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. Aug. 17.
