According to the Sheriff's Department, severe weather and heavy rains caused Clayton Creek to flood Martin Chapel Road on April 11, and a driver had unknowingly driven into the water about 11:00 pm. The man called 9-1-1 and said he was stranded with his 6-month-old daughter.
Deputies Steve Holland and Cory Keene were dispatched to the scene, along with swift water personnel and EMS. The driver said as soon as Holland arrived, he was out of the car and in the water. Holland took the baby to the waiting arms of a paramedic, and then helped the driver get safely out of the water.
The Sheriff's Department said in a press release that Holland's concern and regard for the safety and well-being of anyone in harm's way are second to none. They joined with Calloway Fiscal Court and the entire community in expressing their gratitude for his heroism.
Sheriff Bill Marcum recently awarded Holland with the Life Saving Medal and Citation of Merit.
