Graves County High School senior Bethany Cartwright has been named a Commended Student in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, honors her achievement.

Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2015 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, also known as the PSAT/NMSQT.

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

“We’re very proud of Bethany here at Graves County High School,” said principal Matthew Madding. “Clearly, she is a very gifted and highly motivated student. To earn this commendation among these elite students nationwide is just one more indication of the academic excellence she has achieved throughout her education career. Just as important is the fact that she is a person of strong character. There is no doubt that Bethany Cartwright will achieve even more great things in her life and we’re happy for her to represent the Graves County Schools as she makes her mark on the world.”
