The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced plans for safety improvements along US 45 at the intersections of KY 408 in Folsomdale and Lovelaceville-Florence Station Road (KY 1288).

Plans were announced for the safety improvements, which includes construction of R-Cut connections at each of the intersections. The R-Cut's will be similar to J-Turn's, requiring those traveling through side roads to make a right turn, then using a median turn lane to essentially make a U-turn before turning right through the intersection.

Officials involved with the project say this should cut down the number of possible 'conflict points' in half, reducing the chance of crashes. Public Information Officer Keith Todd spoke with West Kentucky Star about the improvements, saying, "One of the things that the state police have figured out, people tend to try to speed up to make it through the traffic signal before it changes. Some of our analysis indicated that distracted driving was part of it."

Todd continued, "There has been a fairly high crash rate there, and this is one way to deal with that."

According to the KYTC, the US 45 and KY 408 intersection north of Mayfield has received 36 reported crashes. The US 45 and KY 1288 intersection south of Lone Oak has received 19 reported accidents.

With the planning phase completed, bidding for the project is expected to begin in Spring of 2020. Construction is expected to take about 45 days to complete once work begins on the project. You can see additional information about the project at the link below.
