The Christian drama "War Room'' is the top new film at theaters, according to the weekend's box office figures.

"Straight Outta Compton'' topped the box office for the third week with $13.2 million at North American theaters, but "War Room'' was a close second in its debut weekend. The Sony TriStar release took in $11 million by appealing to faith-based audiences, an often powerful but underserved demographic at the multiplex.

Rory Bruer, the head of distribution for Sony, said: "We knew that we were going to get a lot of love, we just didn't expect quite this much love.''

"War Room'' is about an African-American family that perseveres through prayer. The film was directed by Alex Kendrick, whose previous Christian films ``Courageous'' and "Fireproof,'' also had huge box office success.

In Paducah, Cinemark is showing the film in two theaters with multiple showings of nine times a day.  Multiple showings were reported as sold out or nearly sold out over the weekend.  Elsewhere in western Kentucky, the movie is being shown in Murray.
