City of Mayfield Launches New Kids Web Page
By WestKyStar Staff
MAYFIELD, KY - It was just about this time last year that the city of Mayfield launched its new website. Now, they are taking it one step further and introducing a kids page – a unique addition that will be a useful tool for education in local government.
"We get frequent calls from kids doing reports on Mayfield, its history, the operation of location government, etc," Mayfield Mayor Teresa Cantrell said. "I thought it would be a great idea to have a page on our website that could be kid-friendly and educational at the same time.”
Cantrell said that the page is based on a pirate theme – one that’s popular for kids, and one that fits in with the city’s logo, “Discover Our Hidden Treasures.” The page was designed and created by Solution Media, Inc., of Mayfield.
The page features several areas of interest for kids, including local history, famous Mayfieldians, safety tips, taking care of the community, and more. Each area is depicted on a treasure map, and the page’s spokesperson, Captain John Anderson, is an animated character that talks to the kids and guides them through the treasure map. Each area of the map includes downloads for kids to produce their own coloring books/pages, and at the end there is a printable “Certificate of Completion.”
The mayor’s office has selected KY Kids, a local daycare center, as the location for the debut of the kids page. A special visit from the mayor, as well as Captain John Anderson himself is scheduled for the debut party at their school on Friday. Mayor Cantrell wants to schedule several of such visits to promote the kids page for other children in the city and county. For scheduling, contact Shauna Clymer at 247-1981, email her at sclymer@cityofmayfield,.org.
Cantrell encourages parents and kids alike to check out the kids page by logging on to www.cityofmayfield.org and clicking on the link at the bottom of the home page.
