The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is recommending a detour to avoid a persistent traffic snarl on Interstate 24 between about the 70 mile marker and the 30 mile marker.

McCracken Co. Sheriff Jon Hayden traveled that stretch of road this morning, and said there are no accidents, but there are sections of road that change from being clear to having snow or ice-packed conditions, so drivers are suddenly slowing or changing lanes. This causes traffic in those areas to be congested, and sometimes as slow as 10-20 mph.

Keith Todd from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said they have heavily salted the area, and are hoping the warmer temperatures, sunshine, and the use of graders this afternoon will help them make significant progress on getting the road clear.

If you are attempting to travel I-24 eastbound toward Nashville between Paducah and Cadiz it is highly recommend that you detour via I-69 northbound to the Pennyrile Parkway southbound.

If you are westbound on I-24 it is recommended to detour via the Pennyrile Parkway northbound to I-69 southbound. This will get you around the snarled section of I-24. It will add about 30 miles or 30 minutes of travel time, but it will avoid the delays on I-24.
