Fire Consumes Ballard Home

LA CENTER, KY - A fire in Ballard County gutted a home Monday after firefighters from several agencies battled the blaze.
Mark Claxton, fire chief with La Center Rural Fire Department told the Paducah Sun that emergency personnel were dispatched around 3 p.m. to a two-story home at 4526 La Center Road, about three miles south of La Center.
The home belongs to William and Peggy Birney, and is considered a total loss, Claxton said. The cause of the fire is not known, but firefighters are sure it started in the garage.
Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the garage and entire south end of the home in flames. They immediately requested assistance from neighboring departments.
The home lies about three miles from the nearest water source, so pump trucks from La Center, Barlow, Kevil, Bandana and Blandville fire departments were forced to make constant trips to a hydrant at the intersection of U.S. 60 and Coffee Drive to replenish water stocks to fight the blaze.
Traffic was cordoned off at that part of La Center Road for several hours and firefighters stayed at the scene for several hours to monitor the situation. There were no injuries.
