Fire Consumes McCracken Home
By WestKyStar Staff
PADUCAH, KY - An attempt to kill an insect led to a fire that destroyed a home Thursday night near Lone Oak.

The Paducah Sun reports that a fire at 1820 KY 348, also known as Lovelaceville Florence East, broke out at about 7:15 p.m.

By the time firefighters arrived, smoke was already billowing out of the house and flames were showing. It took about 15 minutes to get the blaze under control.

Deputy Hendron Fire Chief Doug Cooper said the fire started in a bedroom, when a resident was trying to kill a wasp. The resident reportedly used a lighter to illuminate under the bed in a search for the wasp and accidentally set the bed on fire.

James Samples, son of homeowner Johnny Samples, said he is happy his family escaped without injury.

Samples said his father was taken to Lourdes hospital as a precaution. Lone Oak Deputy Chief Charlie Blackston said only one room of the house was untouched by the flames.
