Free Screenings, Support Groups & Events in Murray

MURRAY, KY - Murray-Calloway County Hospital’s Wellness Works program will be offering three free community health screenings in February.
· Friday, Feb. 1 from 6-10 a.m. there will be a Go Red: Heart Disease Awareness Free Screening Event in the MCCH North Tower Lobby. Screenings include BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure and blood draw for fasting lipid panel and fasting blood sugar (the lipid and blood sugar screenings require a 12-hour fast of no food or drink except water).
· Thursday, Feb. 7 from 8-11 a.m. and 12-3 p.m. there will be an appointment-only free screening event at the Center for Health and Wellness. Screenings offered include blood pressure, heel scan for osteoporosis, BMI and blood sugar. Call (270) 762-1348 to register.
· Thursday, Feb. 14 there will be free diabetes screenings offered at the Weaks Center in Murray from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
The screenings are free to the communities visited by Wellness Works and are provided to detect diseases in the earliest stages when there are often no symptoms.

The Fibromyalgia Support Group will meet Mon

Murray Hospital Events in February
Staff at Murray-Calloway County Hospital and the Center for Health & Wellness will be offering educational health promotion events during the month of February to community members, Wellness Center members and MCCH employees.
Join us on Friday, Feb. 1 from 6-10 a.m. for a Go Red: Heart Disease Awareness Free Screening Event in the MCCH North Tower Lobby. We will offer free screenings, information, education, and prizes to mark this year’s Wear Red Day. February 1 has been set aside by the American Heart Association to raise awareness about the risks of heart disease. Knowing your numbers is important when it comes to identifying your risk. Light refreshments will be provided.
The following screenings will be offered to help you gauge your risk level:
- Blood Draw for Fasting Lipid Panel and Fasting Blood Sugar: you must be fasting for at least 12 hours (no food or drink except water; please drink plenty of water for hydration)
- Blood Pressure Check
- Waist Circumference Measurement
- Body Mass Index Measurement
An AARP Safe Driving Class will be held Wednesday, Feb. 6 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the MCCH Center for Health and Wellness. Kentucky insurances must offer a discount to those who complete the class. Participants must be age 50 or older and attend the entire class for credit (the course is classroom information only). Cost is $14 general (no PrimeLife discount will be applied for this class) or $12 for AARP members (must show AARP card). Pre-registration is required and the class is limited to the first 20 registrants. Look Good…Feel Better, a free, non-medical, brand-neutral national public service program to help women offset appearance-related changes from cancer treatments, will be held Monday, Feb. 18 from 6-8 p.m. at the Center for Health and Wellness. Join the MCCH Bariatrics Team for a three-part series titled “Obesity: It’s More Than Aesthetics” to confront the truth about obesity and the real dangers it imposes. This series will also address your options for a safe way out. All sessions will be held the Murray State University Curris Center on the third floor in the Barkley Room from 12-12:45 p.m. Part two is Tuesday, Feb. 19, titled “Non-Surgical Weight Loss Options” and presented by Rebecca Wright, RD, LD. A free nutrition education event titled “Lipid Lingo: Nutrition Education” will be held Tuesday, Feb. 26 from 12-12:30 p.m. in the Center for Health and Wellness. February is the month for heart disease awareness and we’ve all been told that “knowing our numbers” is key. But, knowing our numbers is only half the battle…how can we impact them? Join Amy Vaughn, RD, as she walks us through a lipid panel. She’ll touch on what each component means as well as the foods that we can eat and changes that we can make to improve our numbers.
Looking ahead to March, there will be a Diabetes Awareness Event on Saturday, March 16 from 8-10 a.m. in the MCCH South Tower Outpatient Surgery Area. The event will include free health screenings, health information, nutrition and exercise demos, prizes and more.
