The Graves County Agency for Substance Abuse Prevention and similar coalitions from across the Commonwealth attended Capitol Hill earlier this month to educate their legislators about the effectiveness of substance abuse prevention and education.

The importance of substance abuse prevention programs cannot be stressed enough. These programs are important in steering people, particularly youth, in the right direction. Prevention and education programs are essential in preserving our future generations.

“This opportunity allowed us tell our congressional leaders and/or their key staff about our coalition, and what we're accomplishing in Graves County as well as across the Commonwealth,” said Lauren Carr, Project Coordinator.

The coalition that included five youth met with Senator Mitch McConnell, staff from Senator Rand Paul’s office, and Representative James Comer.

Jazlin Guerrero, a senior at Mayfield High School, said “My experience at Capitol Hill Day in Washington, DC is something I won’t forget and I am thankful to be a part of Graves County ASAP.” Guerrero continued, “Being able to participate and talk to some of our legislators on why being drug and alcohol free is important to us. We also talked about what we’ve done to make our community a better place.”

Abbi Stratton, a sophomore at Graves County High School, said “I had such a great experience in Washington, DC.” Stratton continued, “One of my favorite experiences was meeting our Congressmen and telling them what we are doing in Graves County. I also learned that a little hard work can make a change in our community.”

These legislative meetings were part of CADCA’s 2016 National Leadership Forum which was held Feb. 4-9 2018 at the Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center, just outside of Washington, D.C. The CADCA Forum brings together nearly 3,000 participants representing community anti-drug coalitions nationally and internationally.

The 4-day conference features more than 80 training sessions with multiple opportunities to learn the latest strategies to fight substance abuse and hear from nationally-known experts and policymakers.
