The Graves County High School Army JROTC Raider Team members recently took second place in both male and female competitions at Allen County-Scottsville High School.

At the fourth annual meet, Allen County-Scottsville hosted 21 teams from high schools across Kentucky and Tennessee. In all, some 18 all male teams and three teams of all female raider members participated. Graves County took three teams, a total of 35 cadets, and finished second overall in both the male and female categories. Graves defeated powerhouse programs from George Rodgers Clark High School in eastern Kentucky and programs from Bowling Green High School, among others.

Events in the Raider meet included a 12-station wooden obstacle course, a half-mile run, and then constructing and crossing a one rope-bridge; team log sit-up, leadership obstacle, and several agility/strength events. The all-female team completed the same events that the all-male teams did.

“The cadets did great! We beat several good teams that came from well-established JROTC programs,” said Lt. Col. Jason Caldwell, Graves High’s JROTC instructor and Raider coach. “We have two years under our belts and have already developed a reputation throughout the state as having one of the better Raider programs around.”

Caldwell continued, “This is our first time ever to have an all-female team! I was especially proud of the girls! They appeared to reach their limit a few times during a few events but every time they pushed through their pain and exhaustion to finish and bring home second place!

“Our male teams are full of some really good athletes who are hard to beat and even harder to beat as a team,” he explained. “Our next Raider event is 25 April at Western Kentucky University. We had several families come cheer on their cadets in Scottsville and I encourage supporters to attend and watch our cadets in action.”
