Hugs Project of Western KY in Need of Donations
By West Kentucky Star Staff
WESTERN KENTUCKY - The Hugs Project of Western Kentucky is in need of donations to help send care packages to the troops for Christmas.

Gayron Ferguson, who runs the Hugs Project of Western Kentucky, spoke with West Kentucky Star about the organizations mission and their need for donations.

The Hugs Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sending care packages to the troops on a monthly basis.

The Hugs Project of Western Kentucky began 13 years ago when Ferguson's son was serving in Iraq. Ferguson said his son mentioned that some of his friends weren't receiving any mail, so his son asked him if he would send his friends something to boost their morale.

Ferguson said, "My plan was to send my son and his two buddies one box a month each for nine months, then I was going to quit. That was thirteen years ago."

Since then, the Hugs Project of Western Kentucky has evolved into the largest chapter of the Hugs Project in the nation. To date, Ferguson's group has sent out nearly 49,000 care packages to 15,000 servicemembers.

Each care package contains magazines, personal hygiene items, snacks, and letters from children and adults. They also send morale boosters to the military K9 units as well, including dog treats, toys, goggles and booties.

According to Ferguson, they have 120 more packages left to send for December, but that will require approximately $2,000 in donations. Ferguson said due to the pandemic, their fundraising is down about 30 percent, creating a crucial need for donations.

In closing, Ferguson asked the public to say a prayer for the organization and the troops.

"Pray for our soldiers that they'll come home safely, and pray for the Hugs Project that God will continue to bless it and use it the way He wants it to be used." Ferguson continued, "That's an important thing to me, I want this thing to run the way God wants it to run."
