Intersection Warnings in Place at Leeder Bottom
By West Kentucky Star Staff
MELBER, KY - A system of signs and flashing lights has been installed and activated at an intersection that has been the scene of numerous injury crashes.

The Intersection Conflict Warning System will hopefully improve safety at the Leeeder Bottom intersection of U.S. Highway 45 and KY 1241 between Mayfield and Paducah. The system became fully functional last week.

About 12,000 vehicles travel through the intersection each day, and previous safety features that have been installed - oversized stop signs, warning signs, and rumble strips - have not dropped the rate of injury accidents as much as engineers had hoped.

A similar system installed in Lyon County in 2015 has successfully dropped the number of crashes, so KYTC is optimistic that the trend will continue at Leeder Bottom.

With the new system, vehicles approaching the intersection trigger a set of warning signs. Traffic on either road will activate a flashing signal to warn drivers on the other highway that a vehicle is approaching.

Another ICWS is planned at U.S. 45's Folsomdale intersection later this year.
